Unable to contact pilight from OpenHab via pilight binding

Hi there.
I have Rapsberry PI 2 with latest linux (done apt-get update and apt-get upgrade)

  1. I installed piLight and it works fine. (I can use it from its web interface and it controlls socket)
  2. I installed OpenHab (using tutorial here http://www.instructables.com/id/OpenHAB-on-Raspberry-Pi/?ALLSTEPS
  3. I downloaded pilight binding and followed the instructions.

Configuration files
openhab.cfg
items
sitemap
and pilight.json
are here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1cimzvt0x34paex/AAD2EYbzFHMpSz_LoaR09DgBa?dl=0

  1. I am able to verify that pilight has open port 5000 for api calls because I am able to connect to it using telnet.

My problem is that I am unable to controll pilight from OpenHab.
When I run OpenHab using sudo ./start.sh and click the switch configured in sitemap I can see that OpenHab received an event.
Iam unable to see that this event was sent to pilight.

I also tried to run pilight in debug mode to see whether there is some interaction but I see none.

Right now, I do not know how to troubleshoot futher.
There must be something I am missing.

Please help.

First thing that comes to mind is that that instructable shows how to install OH1 version 1.5.1 which is pretty old at the moment. We are just in the process of creating the 1.8 release:

So maybe you could try either with the latest 1.8 SNAPSHOT build from Jenkins or wait for a few more days for the final 1.8 build and retest with that?

Those instructions are pretty out of date. It is far preferable to use apt-get to install openHAB as it sets up all the permissions, users, groups, and other little nit noids that can trip you up. It also gives us a set of assumptions we can make as to where things are located and things to tell you to look at. The apt-get installation instructions are here. And if you installed 1.5, please please follow these instructions to get the latest 1.7.1. There have been tons and tons of changes since 1.5.

From looking at the wiki page for the pilight binding I see that version 1.7 requires at least pilight 6 or greater. Verify your pilight version.

I can’t go to dropbox from this network so I can’t comment on your configuration. If you can post those excerpts of them that are relevant to pilight I might be able to help. Indent each line by four spaces and the forum will format it nicely for you.

Make sure you actually installed the pilight addon jar file to the addons directory. Also verify that the openhab logs indicate that the pilight addon service is running (it will be logged somewhere near the beginning of the log when openHAB starts.

Hi All.
Thank you for reply.

I decided to install OpenHab using apt-get which went smoothly.
I also installed pilight plugin using apt-get.

It is much more easy.
After installation I confgiured pilight binding and items and now it works!

Thank you for help.

Hi,
can you provide the steps how you made you configuration work? I’m pretty new on openHAB and have no idea where to start. Where are all the config files going? …

I highly recommend the Beginners Tutorial

It’s not that i do not know where to put the files, it’s more a “I’ve done it exactly like it’s said but still get NullPointerExceptions”-thing.

I’ve installed the pilight 1.10 binding manually and still get errors while starting up openhab. My pilight config is running, all files seems to be correct.

Any suggestions where to look for the mistakes?!

Hi Tony,
I had the same problem and fixed it by verifiying the correct permissions for the pilight.cfg in the service directory (-rw-r–r-- openhab:openhab ). Although that haven’t helped making the pilight binding work.
At this time I don’t have any errors in logs and still no reaction from the pilight instance. Netstat shows at least that there is a connection between my two Pis (one with Pilight deamon and one with openHAB2).
Any suggestions where to look into more deeply are very much appreciated.
Cheers
Philipp

Hi again,
I solved it finally. It was a missing port configuration within config.json of pilight. Beside the http-port you also have to set the port to which an external system will connect:

By default, pilight uses a random port for its socket server. Use the port setting If you want to set this to a
fixed port. (https://manual.pilight.org/configuration/settings.html#port)

I missed that because I thought it is done through the http-port :confounded:.
The port has obviously to be the same than in pilight.cfg.
Hope it helps someone.
Cheers
Philipp

Just in case it helps, I am using pilight for a year or so and can confirm the NPE error that always happens during startup. But that does not prevent pilight from working; my confg file has the same permission as above, but I still get the NPR error during startup, yet it works and runs rock solid…

HI Philipp,
thanks for the hint, i’ve checked the permissions and changed everything to openhab:openhab. Anyway, no positive result! :frowning:

Regarding your issue with the distributed solution: i hat a similar issue. I could not find pilight, if it was on another device in the network, so i’ve solved it through an AdHock network configuration and two pilight instances:
https://www.pilight.org/get-started/adhoc-network/

I’ve configured an empty pilight instace on the raspberry where openhbab is running (without any senders/receivers) and on top i’ve configured a second pilight instance on a second raspberry with the sender/receiver connected.

hope that helps.

Hi again Philipp,

my config.jsnon looks OK, the port is fine i think. Here is how my settings section looks like:

 "settings": {
                "port": 5000,
                "log-level": 1,
                "pid-file": "/var/run/pilight.pid",
                "log-file": "/var/log/pilight.log",
                "webserver-enable": 1,
                "webserver-root": "/usr/local/share/pilight/",
                "webserver-http-port": 5001,
                "webserver-cache": 1
        },

Hi Markus,
that sounds strange. But i also get the NPE when switching light on and off in the openhab interface. Here is my log on startup:

I suppose i’ve made a mistake in the binding installation process…but i can’t figure it out!

Any ideas?

Can you post your pilight config from openhab.cfg (OH1) or pilight.cfg (OH2)? Also, there should be something in the logs like Established connection to pilight server at.

You have a second error after your startup NPE error; I am not familiar with this one, but from the looks of it, it may be a problem with your pilight.conf; maybe just redo the conf file, mine has only three lines at least, and I have seen the occasional report of very strange errors due to non-standard (and frequently invisible) characters. Not sure whether this applies (and for the sake of completeness, just make sure you use an editor that provides clean files, notepad++ for windows, nano for linux, atom for apple for example).

Hi Markus,
thx for the reply, i am using nano or vi to edit the files on linux. For now my pilight.cfg looks like this:

My /etc/openhab2/services/pilight.cfg file:

pilight:pilight.host=127.0.0.1
pilight:pilight.port=5000

My /etc/openhab2/items/pilight.items file:

Switch  BedroomLamp    "Bedroomlight"             (Lamps)         {pilight="pilight#lightswitch_sz"}

do i have to change the addons.cfg file?

and here is just for sure my /etc/pilight/config.json file:

{
        "devices": {
                "lightswitch_sz": {
                        "protocol": [ "kaku_switch" ],

                }
        }
}

at the moment im stuck…everything and nothing is working…im lost somehow!

In OH2 you need to remove the first ‘pilight’ reference because you’re already in the dedicated pilight config file. So, this should be:

pilight.host=127.0.0.1
pilight.port=5000

This ‘pilight’ is the name of your pilight instance (some other name might be less confusing). This instance name is then used in your item definition:

{pilight="<instance name>#lightswitch_sz"}
{pilight="pilight#lightswitch_sz"}

But you’ve already got that right :slight_smile:

Hi Jerone,
thanks for that hint, i’ve changed the pilight.cfg file and…nothing!

now i’ve installed everything from scratch, removed all config files and only did the following two things after startup:

  1. copied the pilight binding in the /usr/share/openhab2/addons - directory (and removed it after this action appeared in the log)
  2. logged into the openhab2 console and installed the pilight binding manually from my Downloads directory.

Here are the logs:

…and now i have really no idea what the problem is! O_O

So here i realized, that there is something in a config file. I knocked everything down and created all config files manually. that must be the issue for me! (I’m on OS X --> SSH --> nano on my RPi)

what i did is to copy the exact line from the example pilight.items file from Pavel (first post) and changed every value for my needs…and here we go…somehow it worked!

i have no idea what happened, the single characters were the same…however, thaks everyone for guiding!

Hi all,

I have the very same problem.
I am on the unstable branch (which i need because this is the only version which works with zwave) and updated to the latest version of openhab2 via openhabian-config.
Can someone advise what I can check next?

I have the following pilight.cfg:

kaku.host=192.168.1.110
kaku.port=5000
kaku.delay=1000

In the openhab.log file I get the following:
