Why does my (Android) openHAB make a strange noise when I open it

Hi team

Strange question…

For quite some time now, my own Android openHAB app makes a strange noise when I open it.

I can’t find any setting to explain why or to select a different tone (it’s not an Android system alert or notification tone, as far as I can tell)

  • Why?
  • Can I stop it?

Thanks a million

This is not a universal experience. No sounds at all for me when opening the Android app. Where did you install it from? Are you on the beta channel? Does it make the sound when you open your OH UI from a browser?

Are you on openhab cloud and have notifications enabled in the app?

Hi @rlkoshak & @ubeaut

Thanks for the replies.

Yep, I’ll go with that.

My wife’s android App doesn’t make a sound
But in fairness, her phone hasn’t made a sound since 2015

Nothing fancy, just the UK Google Play store

Version 3.17.2

Not as far as I am aware.

Excellent question, but sadly not.

My app seems to be the only one that makes a noise, the SAME noise, EVERY time it opens.
Maybe not straight away, but always within a few seconds.

Interesting…

Yes, there is a cloud connection enabled.
But the app makes the same sound, whether it is connected locally or via the cloud.

I think I need to reply with “yes”, I do get all the notifications that OH sends, but they trigger my normal phone Notification sounds, which is very different to what the app is making.

I’ll try to record the sound so you can hear it.

Are you opening MainUI or Sitemaps with the App?

If MainUI, then there are a couple things you can check. Do you have the MainUI set as a web audio sink (Help & About page)? Do you have the oh-sip-client component on the page that opens first?

If sitemap, then I have no ideas at all.

It was all going so well until this stage…

Yes, Sitemaps only

WD40 helps😜

Good suggestion.

But I’m talking about the app, not my wallet.

That hasn’t been opened since 2024

Hi gang

I really can’t seem to find the cause.

Have any of you got any ideas for what I could do to explore further?

My wife’s app doesn’t make a noise

But to be fair, her phone hasn’t had the ring / notification volume up for years

That doesn’t sound like normal behavior. The openHAB Android app itself shouldn’t play a sound just from being opened (unless it’s tied to a notification or a specific action).

A few things I’d check:Does the sound happen every time you open the app, or only occasionally? Are there any pending notifications from the openHAB app that might be playing a custom sound?Have you configured any location tracking, geofencing, or background services in the app?Does the sound still occur if you disable notifications for the openHAB app in Android settings?

Thanks for the comment and suggestions

Yeah, on my Pixel 6… It’s every single time and it’s a sound that ONLY this app makes.

Do you have any video or webview elements on your sitemap?

Ohhhhhh

Now you mention it, yes.

I have one that loads a basic virtual console for QLCplus (fancy DMX lighting controller).
It’s not very practical on a mobile phone, so I think I’ll convert that into some kind of link that opens a full browser.

Thanks for the tip

When there is talk of “strange noises” in this context, I immediately thought of a poorly shielded or defective phone.

“Strange noises” can occur if there is a fault in the phone’s shielding. This can result in a high-pitched whining or whistling sound when launching an app.

That would also explain why it happens so rarely and only affects specific units within a model series.

I understand that field very well, cross phase interference in big sound systems, I’ve chased a few of those in my time.

“A sound” is the wrong term, maybe I should say, “it plays a notification sound, a very specific tune, every time”

I’ll look into the webview issue first, I’m happy to disable that

thanks for the clarification.
